VJ Edgecombe

Valdez Drexel Edgecombe Jr., known as VJ Edgecombe, is a Bahamian professional basketball player and guard for the Philadelphia 76ers. Edgecombe played college basketball for the Baylor Bears and was a consensus five-star recruit, recognized as one of the top players in his recruiting class. Nicknamed The Generator, Edgecombe participated in development camps organized by NBA player Buddy Hield, whom he later described as a mentor.

Edgecombe's basketball career includes recognition as the New York Gatorade Player of the Year and National Interscholastic Basketball Conference Player of the Year during his high school tenure. As a senior, he earned McDonald's All-American honors and chose Baylor over Duke and Kentucky. During his season at Baylor, Edgecombe was praised by head coach Scott Drew for his discipline and maturity. He was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned Second-Team All-Big 12 honors. Internationally, as a member of the Bahamian National Team at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Edgecombe averaged 16.5 points on 57.1 percent shooting and 2.0 steals per game in FIBA competition.

Edgecombe was selected with the third overall pick by the 76ers in the NBA Draft. In his NBA regular season debut, he scored 34 points, collected seven rebounds, and recorded three assists, setting a new franchise record for points in a debut and ranking third all time in NBA history for points in a debut. He was named an NBA Rising Star as part of NBA All-Star weekend. Known as a two-way guard and strong defender at Baylor, Edgecombe quickly developed into an offensive threat in the NBA, finishing his rookie regular season with averages of 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.

Edgecombe's postseason debut included a standout performance in a play-in win over the Orlando Magic, where he became the youngest player in league history with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a postseason game. He was the first rookie since Tim Duncan to record at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a playoff game and the first rookie with five three-pointers and 10 rebounds in a playoff game in NBA history. Teammates, including Andre Drummond, have noted his confidence and poise. With a combination of athleticism, defensive ability, and offensive skill, Edgecombe has established himself as a prominent young player in professional basketball.
