
Tyler Kolek is a professional basketball player and point guard for the New York Knicks. Kolek began his collegiate career at George Mason, where he was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman after averaging 10.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. After entering the transfer portal, Kolek transferred to Marquette University, where he developed into a leading point guard in college basketball.
At Marquette, Kolek earned recognition as the Big East Player of the Year while leading the team to its first outright regular-season title and its first Big East Tournament championship, securing the Dave Gavitt Trophy as Most Outstanding Player. He averaged 12.9 points, led the league in assists with a 7.5 average, and ranked first in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.0. In his senior season, Kolek led the NCAA in assists and was named a consensus Second-Team All-American and First-Team All-Big East after averaging 15.3 points on 49.6 percent shooting, 7.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals over 31 games. He also set Marquette's single-game record with 18 assists against DePaul.
Kolek was selected with the 34th overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers and was subsequently traded to the New York Knicks in exchange for the draft rights of Dani Díez and second-round picks. He signed a three-year, $6.58 million contract with the Knicks. During his rookie season, Kolek split time between the NBA roster and the G League affiliate, averaging 18.5 points, 9.0 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.8 steals in the G League. In a notable moment, Kolek played in a double-header for both the Knicks and their G League team, the Westchester Knicks, scoring 36 points and 11 assists for Westchester before suiting up for the Knicks later that day.
In his second NBA season, Kolek began to establish a more consistent role in New York's rotation. He recorded a career-high 20 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with 11 rebounds and eight assists, and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter on Christmas Day to help lead the Knicks to a comeback victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Known for his court vision and instinctual playmaking, Kolek has earned the nickname "The Michael Jordan of Rhode Island" from teammates Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. With his passing ability, basketball IQ, and competitive drive, Kolek continues to develop as a reliable contributor in professional basketball.
