Tyler Clippard

Tyler Clippard is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) relief pitcher widely respected for his durability, consistency, and unique pitching style that made him one of the most reliable bullpen arms of his era. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, and raised in Florida, Clippard developed his game at Florida Atlantic University before being selected in the 9th round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees.

Clippard made his MLB debut with the Yankees in 2007 but found his footing after being traded to the Washington Nationals, where he transitioned into a full-time relief role. There, he blossomed into one of the league’s premier setup men and occasional closer, earning two All-Star selections (2011 and 2014). Known for his deceptive over-the-top delivery and signature changeup—considered one of the best in baseball—Clippard consistently generated swings and misses despite relying less on velocity than many of his peers.

During his peak years in Washington, Clippard was a cornerstone of a bullpen that helped elevate the Nationals into National League contention. He led the National League in holds in 2010 and became known for his remarkable durability, appearing in at least 70 games in six consecutive seasons. Over time, he also accumulated more than 50 career saves, often stepping into the closer role when needed.

Clippard’s career included stints with several teams, including the Oakland Athletics, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Indians, and Minnesota Twins. Despite frequently changing uniforms, he maintained a reputation as a dependable late-inning option and veteran presence.

Over a career spanning more than a decade, Clippard appeared in over 800 games, recording a sub-4.00 ERA and more than 1,000 strikeouts—an impressive total for a reliever. His longevity and effectiveness in high-leverage situations underscore his place among the most consistent bullpen pitchers of the 2010s, and his distinctive pitching approach made him a standout figure in modern baseball.
