Trevor Hoffman

Trevor Hoffman is recognized as one of Major League Baseball's most accomplished closers, known for his perseverance and adaptability in the sport. After having a damaged kidney removed as an infant and being restricted from contact sports, Hoffman focused on baseball, excelling as a shortstop at the University of Arizona. He was selected in the 11th round of the MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds and began his professional career as an infielder. Following struggles at the plate and in the field, Hoffman transitioned to pitching, a move that defined his career.

Hoffman's pitching career faced challenges, including a significant shoulder injury that reduced his fastball velocity. To remain effective, he adopted a changeup grip from teammate Donnie Elliott, which became his signature pitch. This adaptation allowed Hoffman to maintain his effectiveness as a closer, setting a Major League Baseball record with four consecutive 40-save seasons, even as his fastball velocity declined.

In the bullpen for the San Diego Padres, Hoffman played a key role in the team's rise as a National League contender. He saved the final three games of the regular season to secure the Padres' division title and set a record with 41 consecutive converted saves. Hoffman finished second in the National League Cy Young Award voting and helped lead the Padres to the World Series. His entrance to "Hells Bells" by AC/DC became a hallmark of Padres home games, known as "Trevor Time." A seven-time All-Star, Hoffman led the National League in saves multiple times.

Hoffman eventually surpassed Lee Smith's record for career saves, becoming the first pitcher to reach the 500- and 600-save milestones. After 16 seasons with San Diego, he played two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, including a 37-save All-Star campaign at age 41. Over 18 major league seasons, Hoffman recorded 601 saves, 856 games finished, a 1.06 walks and hits per inning ratio, 9.36 strikeouts per nine innings, and a 2.87 career ERA.

Hoffman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the sixth reliever to receive the honor. Major League Baseball established the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award in his name, recognizing the top reliever in the National League annually. Off the field, Hoffman contributed to the National Kidney Foundation and continues to serve as senior advisor for baseball operations for the Padres, contributing to the franchise's ongoing development.
