
Tre'vell Anderson is a journalist, social curator, critic, and podcaster whose career focuses on centering the stories of marginalized communities in culture and society. Anderson began their journalism career at the Los Angeles Times, where they established a beat dedicated to diversity in Hollywood, emphasizing Black and queer film. Throughout their career, Anderson has covered major Hollywood red carpets and interviewed figures such as Viola Davis, Lil Nas X, Laverne Cox, and André Leon Talley. Their work has appeared in Essence, TIME, and Entertainment Weekly, and has been recognized by organizations including the Online News Association, National Association of Black Journalists, the Shorty Awards, and the Los Angeles Press Club.
Following their tenure at the Los Angeles Times, Anderson served as Director of Culture and Entertainment at Out magazine and later as Editor-at-Large for Xtra magazine. They have authored articles and led projects that garnered industry attention, including features on Black comedic actresses, analyses of the "Black films don't travel" myth in Hollywood, and commentary on race, privilege, and attitudes in the Academy Awards conversation. Anderson has also held leadership roles with the Trans Journalists Association, serving as co-executive director and later as executive director.
In audio storytelling, Anderson hosted the award-winning shows "FANTI" (Maximum Fun) and "What A Day" (Crooked Media). Through their media production company Slayzhon, Anderson hosted and produced the limited series podcasts "We See Each Other: The Podcast," based on their debut book, and "The Official Rustin Podcast" in partnership with Netflix. They also hosted the Entertainment Weekly podcast "Untold Stories: Beyond the Binary," which explored nonbinary identity in culture and media.
Anderson's debut book, "We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film," was published by Andscape Books and examines the history of trans characters on screen while advocating for greater inclusivity. Anderson received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work – Instructional for "Historically Black Phrases," which they co-authored. They have also received two GLAAD Media Award nominations for articles including "Why Billy Porter is a National Treasure" and "It's Time for a New Tipping Point for Transgender Folks in Hollywood."
Anderson has been recognized on Out magazine's list of the 100 most impactful LGBTQ+ people and The Root's list of the 100 most influential African Americans. Their career is dedicated to elevating voices at the intersections of identity and experience. Anderson has appeared as a moderator and commentator on Good Morning America, MSNBC, NPR, NBC Nightly News, and Entertainment Tonight Live, and is featured in the Netflix documentary "Disclosure," the documentary "Heightened Scrutiny," and the National Museum of African American History and Culture's documentary "gOD-Talk: Reimagining Faith in the 21st Century." Anderson has also served as president of the National Association of Black Journalists of Los Angeles, co-chair of NABJ's LGBTQ Task Force, and Region IV Director for the organization.
