Tom Hardin

Tom Hardin is a former Wall Street hedge fund analyst who played a significant role in U.S. securities enforcement. Hardin began his career as a long-short hedge fund analyst focused on equities in the technology sector. He holds a Bachelor of Science in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. During his time on Wall Street, Hardin became involved in insider trading. When approached by the FBI, he chose to cooperate, wearing a covert wire and assisting in exposing corruption within the financial industry.

Known by the alias Tipper X, Hardin wore a wire more than 40 times, helping the FBI build over 20 cases as part of Operation Perfect Hedge, a major insider trading investigation. His recordings contributed to dozens of cases against Wall Street traders, resulting in more than 80 convictions across the hedge fund industry. The New York Times described him as the secret witness at the center of a major insider trading case.

As the youngest professional implicated in the investigation, Hardin experienced the psychological challenges of secrecy and public scrutiny. Through self-reflection, he accepted responsibility for his actions and shifted his focus to understanding human behavior and the factors influencing ethical decision-making. Hardin has been invited by the FBI to speak to new agents and works as a keynote speaker, corporate trainer, and board advisor on behavioral ethics, compliance, and organizational conduct and culture risk.

Hardin addresses topics such as compliance, ethics, and conduct risk, drawing on his personal experiences to examine why professionals may make poor decisions and how organizations can prevent ethical lapses. He has delivered more than 200 speaking engagements, including in-house presentations for financial services companies and conference keynotes. His approach combines candid storytelling with practical advice to help organizations foster a culture of integrity.

Hardin is the author of the memoir "Wired on Wall Street: The Rise and Fall of Tipper X," published by Wiley. The book details his journey from hedge fund analyst to FBI informant and explores the complexities of financial crime and personal accountability. Hardin has also partnered with Worthy Books, a nonprofit organization, to share his story with nonprofits, libraries, and underserved communities nationwide.
