Tina Charles is recognized as one of the most accomplished players in women's basketball. She won the John R. Wooden Award as the top player in women's college basketball while leading the University of Connecticut to an undefeated season and a second consecutive national championship. Charles was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament, and went on to earn the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, AP Player of the Year, and U.S. Basketball Writers Association Player of the Year honors as a senior. She was a three-time All-American and first-team All-Big East selection, and remains Connecticut's career record holder in rebounds with 1,367. Her performance at the collegiate level established her as a consensus top prospect, and she entered the professional ranks as one of the most heralded players in the sport.
Charles was the overall No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft, selected by the Connecticut Sun, and was named WNBA Rookie of the Year. In her first season, she set league records for rebounds with 398 and double-doubles with 22. Charles was named WNBA MVP, led the league in double-doubles, and set the mark for the fastest player in league history to reach 900, 1,000, and 1,100 rebounds. She recorded her best scoring season averaging a career-high 21.5 points per game while also leading the league in rebounds with 9.9 per game, earning her fourth rebounding title. Over her career, Charles led the league in scoring twice and rebounding four times, while making nine All-WNBA teams and four All-Defensive teams.
Charles concluded her 15-year career as one of the top centers in WNBA history, finishing as the league's all-time leader in rebounds, double-doubles, and made field goals, while ranking second all-time in scoring behind Diana Taurasi. After starting her WNBA career with the Connecticut Sun, Charles also played for the New York Liberty, Washington Mystics, Phoenix Mercury, Seattle Storm, and Atlanta Dream, and competed internationally in Turkey, Poland, and China. On the international stage, she earned three World Cup titles and three Olympic gold medals with the United States women's basketball team.
Charles was inducted into the NYC Basketball Hall of Fame as the first female to head a class at any major basketball hall of fame and the first active player ever inducted. Off the court, she established Hopey's Heart Foundation to distribute Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to schools, donating 500 AEDs through the organization, which is named in honor of her aunt. Charles received the Mannie Jackson Basketball's Human Spirit Award for her dedication to education and heart health, and has donated her full WNBA salary to her charity. She has also funded a school in Mali and earned the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award twice for her contributions.
Charles was known as a complete offensive hub, a reliable double-double threat, and a player capable of carrying a franchise-level workload across multiple teams and eras. She is widely regarded as one of the best players in WNBA history not to have appeared in the Finals. Upon her retirement, Charles reflected on a career defined by perseverance, noting that her journey from Queens, New York to the pinnacle of women's basketball was marked by dedication both on the court and in the community.
