Timothy Beatley is the Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. Beatley is recognized internationally for his research and authorship in sustainable city planning, with a focus on strategies that help cities reduce their ecological footprints and enhance livability and equity. He coined the term green urbanism, which describes the planning process used to create sustainable cities.
Beatley has authored or co-authored more than 15 books, including "Green Urbanism: Learning from European Cities," "Native to Nowhere: Sustaining Home and Community in a Global Age," "Biophilic Cities: Integrating Nature Into Urban Design and Planning," and "Blue Urbanism: Connecting Oceans and Cities." His book "Ethical Land Use" was named by the American Planning Association as one of the 100 Essential Books in Planning. In "Green Urbanism," Beatley examines lessons from the sustainable city movement in Europe, analyzing the progress and policies of 25 innovative cities across 11 European countries.
A significant contribution from Beatley is the development of the biophilic city concept. He has argued that while urban greening efforts often emphasize public transit, renewable energy, and energy-efficient building systems, these elements alone are insufficient, as humans have an innate need to connect with the natural world. In Beatley's view, a biophilic city is more than a biodiverse city; it is a place that learns from nature, emulates natural systems, incorporates natural forms and images into its buildings and cityscapes, and integrates design and planning with nature. He has also collaborated on several films about green cities and urban nature, including "The Nature of Cities."
Beatley founded and directs the Biophilic Cities Project at the University of Virginia and is co-founder of the university's Center for Design and Health. He serves as executive director of the Biophilic Cities Network, a global network that includes cities such as St. Louis, Austin, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton. The network has expanded its reach through initiatives like the Biophilic Cities Journal, webinars, and a web-based global collaborative platform, supported by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Beatley's work in urban sustainability, biophilic design, and city planning continues to influence scholars, practitioners, and policymakers focused on building cities that are both sustainable and deeply connected to the natural environment.
