Tim Brown

Tim Brown is a New Zealand entrepreneur, former professional footballer, and co-founder of Allbirds, a sustainable footwear brand recognized for its focus on environmentally friendly materials and minimalist design. Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in Design from the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning before beginning a professional soccer career that spanned the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. As a midfielder, he played for Wellington Phoenix and served as vice-captain of New Zealand's national team, the All Whites, contributing to the team's qualification for the FIFA World Cup.

Following his retirement from professional sports, Brown completed a master's in management from the London School of Economics. During his athletic career, he became interested in sustainable product design, particularly in the footwear industry, which he viewed as dominated by petroleum-based materials and excessive branding. Drawing inspiration from New Zealand's wool industry, Brown developed a sustainable sneaker, refining the concept through multiple prototypes and securing funding through a Kickstarter campaign. He also participated in London's Sirius Programme and won Richard Branson's Three New Things global innovation competition. Partnering with renewables expert and biotech engineer Joey Zwillinger, Brown launched Allbirds in San Francisco, introducing the "Wool Runner," a sneaker made from superfine Merino wool that received recognition from Time Magazine.

Allbirds gained popularity in the technology sector and among environmentally conscious consumers, earning accolades from Fast Company and inclusion in TIME's list of 50 Genius Companies. As a certified B Corporation, Allbirds integrated sustainability into its operations, utilizing materials with lower carbon footprints, implementing carbon labeling, and introducing the "M0.0NSHOT," a net-zero carbon shoe. The company later went public on Nasdaq, highlighting its growth from a startup to a global footwear brand.

Brown has been recognized for his role in advancing sustainable design and mission-driven entrepreneurship.
