Tiago Splitter Biography
Recognized for his contributions to the world of basketball as both a player and a coach, Tiago Splitter has a distinguished career that spans various international and NBA teams. Notably, Splitter was the first Brazilian-born player to win an NBA championship, a feat he achieved in 2014 with the San Antonio Spurs. As a player, he also won gold medals with the Brazil men's national basketball team at the 2003 FIBA South American Championship, the 2003 Pan American Games, the 2005 FIBA AmeriCup, and the 2009 FIBA AmeriCup, further solidifying his place in the sport's history.
Splitter transitioned into coaching after announcing his retirement from professional basketball on February 19, 2018. His coaching journey took him to the Brooklyn Nets, Houston Rockets, Paris Basketball, and finally to the Portland Trail Blazers. As a coach, he won the LNB Élite championship and the French Cup in 2025 with Paris Basketball. Splitter's coaching prowess was also on display when he led the Brazilian U23 national team to a gold medal at the GLOBL Jam Tournament in 2022.
Presently, Splitter serves as the interim head coach for the Portland Trail Blazers, a position he assumed on October 23, 2025. His impact on the sport has been recognized by numerous awards, such as the Spanish Supercup MVP Award in 2006 and 2007, the ACB MVP Award in 2010, and the ACB Finals MVP Award in 2010. In a fitting tribute to his stellar career, Saski Baskonia retired his jersey number 21 on May 5, 2024.
