Thomas Kail

Thomas Kail is a Tony Award-winning film and theater director recognized for his direction of Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including Lin-Manuel Miranda's musicals "Hamilton" and "In the Heights." Kail received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for his work on "Hamilton." He also earned a Tony nomination for Best Direction of a Musical for directing "In the Heights."

Kail's additional theater credits include directing the Broadway plays "Lombardi" and "Magic/Bird," as well as the off-Broadway production of "Broke-ology." He formed a long-standing collaboration with Miranda after the two met as students at Wesleyan University. Together, they co-created the freestyle hip-hop group Freestyle Love Supreme, which performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, Montreal Comedy Festival and Melbourne Comedy Festival.

In television, Kail directed "Grease! Live" for FOX and Oprah's Primetime Oscar Special for ABC. He served as executive producer of the TV show "Freestyle Love Supreme" for Pivot and was musical director of The Electric Company. Kail directed the world premiere of "Dry Powder" at The Public Theater in New York City, featuring Hank Azaria, Claire Danes, John Krasinski and Sanjit De Silva, as well as "Tiny Beautiful Things" at The Public.

Kail was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor for "Hamilton." He received two Emmy nominations for his work on the autobiographical miniseries "Fosse/Verdon." Kail also directed and produced the live recording of "Hamilton" in movie format, which was recognized by critics for its visuals, performances and direction. His career spans Broadway, television, and film, with a focus on musical theater direction, live television production, and collaboration with leading figures in the performing arts industry.
