The Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang is a hip-hop group from Englewood, New Jersey. The group's sound combines hip-hop with funk, R&B, and elements of a disco beat. The line-up consists of Wonder Mike, Big Bank Hank, and Master Gee. The trio was assembled into a group by producer Sylvia Robinson, who also founded Sugar Hill Records, along with her husband, record mogul Joe Robinson

They shot to fame in 1979 with the hit title track, “Rapper's Delight,” from their 1980 debut album earning the band the status of being the first hip-hop group to have a Top 40 chart hit.

Their second album, “8th Wonder,” produced the minor hits, “Apache” “Showdown” featuring Grandmaster Flash the Furious Five and the title track.

“Rappin' Down Town,” their third album was released in 1983 and album included the slight R&B hits, “The Lover in You” and “The Word is Out.” The final three tracks on the album would also appear on the band's next album, “Livin' in the Fast Lane,” the following year, with “Kick It Live from 9 to 5” becoming a moderate hit.

Despite the popularity the band experienced with, “Rapper's Delight,” they were unable to produce another song with equal success. The band eventually called it quits in the mid-1980s as the musical climate began to change and pursued other projects. 1999 saw the trio reunite and recorded “Jump on It!,” a children's album of hip-hop music.
