The Protomen

The Protomen are an American rock band recognized for blending hard rock, science fiction, and theatrical storytelling. The group composes and performs science fiction rock opera concept albums influenced by pop culture, including films and video games. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, the band consists primarily of Middle Tennessee State University recording program graduates and originated as a project to fulfill academic requirements.

The Protomen gained attention with their self-titled debut album, commonly referred to as "Act I," which introduced a dystopian narrative inspired by the Capcom video game franchise Mega Man. Their music incorporates elements of noise rock, analog distortion, and synthesizers, telling the story of a scientist who creates two robotic sons to challenge their city's authoritarian ruler. The band's style, often described as science fiction rock, features video game and science fiction-inspired sound effects alongside hard rock and rock and roll influences. Nintendo Power highlighted the album for its unique approach and appeal to fans of the Mega Man series.

Following their debut, the Protomen released "Act II: The Father of Death," a prequel that expanded the band's mythology and showcased a broader musical range. For this album, the group collaborated with producer Alan Shacklock. "Act II" was crafted to sound cleaner, reflecting a narrative set before a pivotal event, and draws on influences from Ennio Morricone to Bruce Springsteen. The song "Light Up the Night," featured on "Act II: The Father of Death," is recognized as one of the band's signature tracks. The Protomen also released two cover albums, "The Protomen Present: A Night of Queen" and "The Cover Up: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," demonstrating their versatility and engagement with classic rock.

The trilogy concluded with "Act III: This City Made Us," which reached number nine on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart. While the band's narrative draws from the Mega Man video game series, it evolves into a broader exploration of technology, power dynamics, fascism, and intolerance. In addition to their studio albums, the Protomen contributed music to "Video Game High School," and their cover of "In the Air Tonight" was featured in season 3 of "Cobra Kai." The band also composed the score for "Terminator the Second," a theatrical production retelling the plot of Terminator 2: Judgment Day using dialogue from William Shakespeare's works.

The Protomen are known for immersive live performances, touring with their rock opera and performing in character under stage names while wearing silver and black face paint. Audience participation is a hallmark of their shows. The band regularly appears at festivals and fan conventions, including MAGFest, and has performed at major events such as Bonnaroo, SXSW, CMJ, and PAX East. The Protomen are recognized as a leading act in the video game music and geek rock genres and have been among Nashville's highest-paid stage performers.
