The California Honeydrops

The California Honeydrops are a retro-soul band originating in Oakland, California, known for their blend of roots, blues, R&B, and soul. The group was founded by Polish-born singer, guitarist, and trumpeter Lech Wierzynski, who began performing as a busker in Bay Area subway stations after studying at Oberlin College. Wierzynski partnered with drummer and percussionist Benjamin Malament, also an Oberlin alumnus, forming the core of the initial duo. Their early performances drew on jug-band traditions, featuring improvised, roots-inspired sets at BART stations such as MacArthur, Rockridge, and Ashby.

The California Honeydrops' sound is characterized by soulful vocal harmonies, energetic brass and horn sections, and a rhythm section influenced by New Orleans funk. The lineup includes Yanos Lustig on saxophone, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards and guitar, Beaumont Beaullieu on bass, and regular collaborators Oliver Tuttle on trombone, Leon Cotter on saxophone and clarinet, and Miles Lyons on trombone and sousaphone. The band is recognized for its commitment to improvisation, often performing without set lists and ensuring that each show is unique.

Since the release of their debut album, "Soul Tub," the California Honeydrops have produced several studio albums, including "Spreadin' Honey" and the double album "Call It Home: Vol. 1 & 2." Their album "Soft Spot" explores relational themes and has been noted for its emotional depth. The album "Keep On Diggin'" features groove-driven tracks and highlights the band's evolution toward a polished yet roots-oriented sound. The acoustic album "Redwood Highway" demonstrates their versatility, incorporating soulful grooves and acoustic elements while expanding on traditional American roots music forms.

The California Honeydrops have performed at major festivals such as Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia, Outside Lands, Monterey Jazz, and Lightning In A Bottle. They have toured with artists including B.B. King, Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Their music has been streamed more than 200 million times and featured in TV shows and films such as "Dead To Me," "Alaska Daily," and "Black-ish." Rolling Stone has described the band as evoking the sound of Booker T and channeling the energy of Sly and the Family Stone, underscoring their impact on the American roots music scene.
