The Breeders Biography
The Breeders are an alternative rock band formed in 1989 by Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. Originally conceived as a side project, the band quickly gained traction with their raw sound, melodic sensibility, and feminist edge. Their 1993 breakthrough album Last Splash, featuring the hit single “Cannonball,” became a defining release of the decade, achieving platinum status and securing the group a central spot in the '90s alt-rock movement. Celebrated for their blend of punk energy, pop hooks, and sonic experimentation, their music often explores themes of identity, alienation, and empowerment.
Over the years, The Breeders’ lineup has evolved, but Kim Deal has remained the band’s creative anchor, known for her distinct vocals, gritty guitar work, and off-kilter songwriting. After a hiatus, the original Last Splash lineup reunited in the 2010s, culminating in the critically acclaimed 2018 album All Nerve, their first with that lineup in 25 years. In 2024, pop sensation Olivia Rodrigo handpicked The Breeders as a special guest support act for select arena dates—including sold‑out shows at Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles venues during her GUTS World Tour.
