The Aquabats are an American rock band formed in Huntington Beach, California. Known for their superhero-themed stage personas, the group is easily identified by their masks and matching costumes. The Aquabats present themselves as crime-fighting superheroes, a concept that shapes much of their music and theatrical live performances, which often include stunts and choreographed fight scenes with costumed villains and monsters.
The band's early work was rooted in third wave ska, with influences from surf and punk rock. Over time, their sound evolved to incorporate synth-based rock and new wave, blending elements of rock and roll, pop-punk, ska, and synth-pop. The Aquabats independently recorded and released their debut LP, "The Return of The Aquabats," selling more than 24,000 copies without distribution. After signing with Goldenvoice Records, they released their second album, "The Fury of The Aquabats!," during the American ska revival. This album marked their entry into the mainstream, peaking at number 172 on the Billboard 200. Songs such as "Super Rad!" became anthems for the band and expanded their fan base. Notable alumni include drummer Travis Barker, who played with the group before joining Blink-182.
"Charge!!," the band's first release as a new wave-influenced quintet, revitalized their career and led to a return to consistent touring. The Aquabats have released seven studio albums, with three charting on the Billboard 200: "The Fury of The Aquabats!," "Hi-Five Soup!," and "The Aquabats! Super Show! Television Soundtrack: Volume One." The soundtrack debuted at number 165 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Heatseekers Albums chart. The Aquabats' seventh studio album, "Finally!," was released following a fan-funded campaign.
From 2012 to 2014, the band created and starred in "The Aquabats! Super Show!," a live-action musical action-comedy television series that aired on The Hub for three seasons. The show earned eight Daytime Emmy Award nominations and won one. It featured a mix of live-action storylines, cartoon shorts, and musical interludes. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the series was revived as a YouTube series. In their efforts to fund "The Aquabats! Super Show!," frontman Christian Jacobs and collaborator Scott Schultz also created the preschool program "Yo Gabba Gabba!," which aired on Nick Jr. for four seasons.
The Aquabats' live performances are known for their immersive and family-friendly atmosphere. Their shows feature a large video screen displaying montages of cartoons, movies, TV shows, and stock footage synchronized to each song, as well as prerecorded comedy videos and fictional commercials. While "The Aquabats! Super Show!" was targeted toward children, Jacobs has stated that the band's primary goal is to create entertainment for all ages, appealing to both children and adults. With a career spanning more than three decades, The Aquabats have established themselves as a unique presence in American rock music, blending theatricality, humor, and genre-crossing sound.
