The 1975 is an English pop rock band known for its genre-blending sound and artistic approach within the contemporary music industry. The group comprises lead vocalist, producer, lyricist, and rhythm guitarist Matty Healy; lead guitarist Adam Hann; bassist Ross MacDonald; and drummer and producer George Daniel. The band's name was inspired by a page of notes found in Healy's preowned copy of "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac, dated "1 June, The 1975." The members began their musical journey covering punk songs and performing at local all-ages shows before developing original material.

The 1975 released their debut EP through the UK indie label Dirty Hit, with the lead track receiving airplay on BBC Radio 1. Their live performances and growing online presence contributed to their early recognition. After a series of EPs, the band released their self-titled debut album, featuring singles such as "Sex," "Chocolate," and "Robbers." The album reached number one in the United Kingdom, and the band supported it with a world tour that included a performance at Coachella.

The 1975 is recognized for exploring a wide range of genres, including pop rock, synth-pop, R&B, funk rock, electropop, UK garage, 2-step, ambient, shoegaze, post-punk, post-rock, jazz, soul, and gospel. Their second album, "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It," topped both the UK Albums and Billboard 200 charts. The band received the Brit Award for Best British Group. Their third album, "A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships," included the Grammy-nominated single "Give Yourself a Try," reached the top of the UK albums chart, and placed in the top five on the Billboard 200. The album also earned the Songwriters of the Year honor at the Ivor Novello Awards.

The band's fourth album, "Notes on a Conditional Form," again reached number one in the UK and the top five on the Billboard 200. It featured a spoken word track with Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg and the single "If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)," featuring Phoebe Bridgers. The fifth album, "Being Funny in a Foreign Language," co-produced by Healy, Daniel, and Jack Antonoff, combined experimental elements with the band's earlier melodic style. It topped the UK Albums Chart and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Brit Awards. The 1975 has earned multiple Brit Awards, Grammy nominations, and a Mercury Prize shortlisting, highlighting their impact on alternative and pop rock music.

Following extensive touring, the band announced an indefinite hiatus and performed only one concert the following year, headlining the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. The 1975 maintains a significant presence in modern rock, with ongoing influence in pop rock, alternative, and electronic music.
