The Georgia Satellites

The Georgia Satellites are an American Southern rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, known for a raw, roots-oriented rock 'n' roll sound that blends elements of rockabilly, blues, and classic rock. The group originated when Dan Baird, lead guitarist Rick Richards, bassist Keith Christopher, and drummer David Michaelson formed Keith and the Satellites in Atlanta. Although the band initially disbanded due to a lack of progress, their demo was released as the "Keep the Faith" EP by Making Waves, a London record label. Positive press for the EP prompted the band to regroup, attracting the attention of American record labels. The group signed with Elektra Records and recorded their debut full-length album at Cheshire Sound Studios in Atlanta.

The self-titled debut album, "Georgia Satellites," marked a significant moment in American rock music. The album featured the track "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received heavy rotation on MTV. The album sold over one million copies and achieved platinum status from the RIAA. The band's growing profile led to extensive touring, including opening for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on the Rock 'n' Roll Caravan tour alongside the Del Fuegos. The video for "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" earned a nomination for Best New Artist in a Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The Georgia Satellites' sound draws from Chuck Berry, the Rolling Stones, the Faces, Little Feat, and AC/DC, with a Southern influence. The band recorded a cover of The Swinging Blue Jeans' "Hippy Hippy Shake" for the movie "Cocktail," releasing it as a single that reached No. 45 on the Billboard chart. The group also toured with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and released two additional albums: "Open All Night," which led to an opening slot on Robert Plant's tour, and "In the Land of Salvation and Sin." After these releases, the band went on hiatus before returning to live performances.

The Georgia Satellites have experienced several lineup changes, with Rick Richards remaining as the only constant member. The studio album "Shaken Not Stirred" features re-recordings of earlier material and eight new songs. The current lineup includes Richards on lead guitar and backing vocals, Fred McNeal on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Bruce Smith on bass, and Todd Johnston on drums. The band continues to perform live shows. The concert recording "Lightnin' in a Bottle" captures a 1988 performance and features a mix of original songs and covers, including the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated," George Jones' "White Lightnin'," and Chuck Berry's "Run Run Rudolph." The Georgia Satellites maintain a presence in the Southern rock genre, recognized for energetic live performances and their contribution to American rock music.
