Terry Fontenot

Terry Fontenot is an NFL executive recognized for his tenure as general manager of the Atlanta Falcons, where he became the first Black general manager in the franchise's history. Fontenot played safety for Tulane, serving as team captain and contributing to a Hawaii Bowl victory. He holds a bachelor's degree in business and organizational information technology. After a leg injury ended his playing career, Fontenot began his NFL career as a marketing and community affairs intern with the New Orleans Saints.

Fontenot transitioned to football operations when general manager Mickey Loomis invited him to join the scouting staff as an intern. He advanced to pro scout, a position he held for seven seasons, then became director of pro scouting for another seven seasons, and later served as vice president/assistant general manager – pro personnel. During his time with the Saints, Fontenot contributed to eight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl XLIV victory.

Fontenot was hired as general manager of the Falcons, joining from the rival Saints. He became known for his talent evaluation and for implementing a "best player available" draft philosophy, which added offensive players such as Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and Bijan Robinson to the roster. Fontenot managed significant salary cap challenges, oversaw the transition from the Matt Ryan era, and worked to stabilize the quarterback position with the signing of Kirk Cousins and the drafting of Michael Penix Jr. He also orchestrated a trade for rookie pass rusher James Pearce Jr., who contributed to a defensive unit that set a franchise record with 57 sacks. Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris were dismissed after an 8-9 season.
