Tara Houska Biography
Tara Houska is a citizen of Couchiching First Nation, a tribal attorney, land defender, environmental and Indigenous rights advocate, and founder of the Giniw Collective, an Indigenous women and two-spirit-led frontline resistance group focused on environmental justice and Indigenous sovereignty. Houska has been active in opposing the Line 3 oil pipeline and the Dakota Access pipeline, and is involved in the Land Back movement and efforts to defund fossil fuels.
Houska is a TED speaker and recipient of the American Climate Leadership Award and the Rachel’s Network Catalyst Award. She served as an advisor on Native American affairs to Senator Bernie Sanders and co-founded Not Your Mascots, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting positive representation of Native Americans in public discourse. Her writing has appeared in the climate anthology "All We Can Save," as well as in the New York Times, CNN, Vogue, and Indian Country Today.
Houska holds a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota.
