Tara Bosch

Tara Bosch is a Canadian entrepreneur and the founder of SmartSweets, a company recognized for disrupting the confectionery industry by offering low-sugar candy alternatives. Bosch attended the University of British Columbia as an arts student before leaving to focus on her business. The concept for SmartSweets originated from a personal conversation with her grandmother, who expressed regret over consuming high-sugar candy due to its health impacts. This prompted Bosch to question why candy could not be both enjoyable and better for consumers.

Bosch began developing low-sugar candy using plant-based fibers and sweeteners, experimenting with hundreds of gummy-bear molds in her basement apartment kitchen. With limited resources, she secured $105,000 in debt financing to launch SmartSweets. Without a formal background in food science, Bosch taught herself through online research, scientific journals, and extensive trial and error. SmartSweets experienced rapid growth, with sales reaching $2 million in the first year, $16 million in the second, $60 million in the third, and $125 million in the fourth.

Bosch appeared on the Canadian television series "Dragon's Den," where she successfully pitched SmartSweets and received a favorable investment offer. The brand expanded into U.S. retail, securing a partnership with Whole Foods and achieving nationwide distribution. SmartSweets became the leading low-sugar candy brand in North America, available in 130,000 stores and contributing to a significant reduction in sugar consumption among consumers. The company was acquired by TPG Growth for $360 million, establishing Bosch as a prominent figure in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry.

Bosch also built a women-led organization, with over 80 percent of employees being women and all team members receiving equity. SmartSweets is recognized as one of the fastest-growing CPG brands founded by a solo female entrepreneur in North America. Bosch has received several entrepreneurial awards, including Canada's Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award, Forbes 30 Under 30, and Peter Thiel Fellow. Her work has been featured in Entrepreneur, Inc., Forbes, Fortune, and the Globe and Mail.

Following the acquisition of SmartSweets, Bosch launched "Bold Beginnings," a program designed to support women under 30 with entrepreneurial ambitions. Through this initiative, she provides a $25,000 grant, mentorship, and community support to help young women realize their business goals. Bosch advocates for normalizing the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs, including self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Her journey from developing products in a basement kitchen to leading a multimillion-dollar acquisition positions her as a credible voice in entrepreneurship, business leadership, and the consumer goods sector.
