Tania Bruguera

Tania Bruguera is a Cuban performance and installation artist, activist, and educator known for her provocative work that interrogates power, control, freedom of expression, and social justice. Her art practice, often described as artivism (art + activism), challenges institutional structures and explores how art can be used as a tool for civic engagement and societal transformation.

Bruguera studied fine arts in Havana and earned an M.F.A. in performance from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She founded the Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Behavior Art School)—the first performance studies program in Latin America—providing a framework for artists to engage with social issues through creative practice. Her work has been exhibited at major international venues including Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and Tate Modern, and is held in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

Throughout her career, Bruguera has created performances and interventions that blur the boundaries between art, politics, and life. Notable projects include Tatlin’s Whisper #5 and Tatlin’s Whisper #6, which invited audiences to engage directly with issues of speech and authority, and The Burden of Guilt, a visceral exploration of historical trauma. Her actions have frequently drawn attention—both acclaim and censorship—and have led to arrests and confrontations with Cuban authorities due to their critique of censorship and restrictions on civil liberties.

In addition to her artistic practice, Bruguera has held academic positions and, most recently, served as Senior Lecturer in Media & Performance at Harvard University, where she continues to expand her work through teaching and collaborative projects that intersect artistic innovation with civic discourse.

Bruguera’s art is distinguished by its intellectual depth, its insistence on engagement with real‑world issues, and its commitment to the idea that art can be useful—a means to imagine new social possibilities and empower communities to envision alternatives to traditional power structures.
