Marcos Efraín Masís Fernández, known professionally as Tainy, is a Puerto Rican record producer, songwriter, and recording engineer recognized for his significant contributions to reggaeton and Latin music production. Tainy began his career after signing with the reggaeton production duo Luny Tunes at age 15, where he observed leading artists such as Don Omar, Ivy Queen, and Tego Calderón in the studio. He made his production debut on the reggaeton compilation "Mas Flow 2," followed by "Los Benjamins," and later served as co-producer on Wisin & Yandel's release "Los Extraterrestres."
Tainy has played a central role in the evolution of reggaeton, incorporating elements from R&B, trap, trance, and heavy metal to expand the genre's sound. He produced the majority of tracks on J Balvin's "Vibras" and contributed to Bad Bunny's debut album. Tainy produced nine tracks on Bad Bunny's "Un Verano Sin Ti" and was instrumental in the global success of the song "I Like It," featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, which topped international charts and showcased his ability to blend Latin and mainstream pop influences.
Tainy is a four-time Grammy nominee, six-time Latin Grammy winner, and multiple BMI Award recipient. Billboard named him among the "Top Ten Producers of the 21st Century." He has spent 116 weeks at number one on the Billboard producer chart, working with artists including Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, and Dua Lipa. He received the BMI Award for "Contemporary Latin Songwriter of the Year" for hits such as "Baila Conmigo" with Rauw Alejandro and Selena Gomez, "In da Getto" with Skrillex and J Balvin, and "Lo Siento BB:/" with Bad Bunny and Julieta Venegas.
In addition to his production work, Tainy co-founded Neon16, a talent incubator, with music executive Lex Borrero. His debut album, "Data," accumulated over 2 billion streams, debuted at number three globally on Spotify, and was nominated for Best Musica Urbana Album at the Grammy Awards. The album, inspired by anime such as "Ghost in the Shell," centers on a conceptual narrative involving a cyborg-human hybrid named Sena. Rolling Stone included "Data" on its year-end best albums list.
Tainy's career spans collaborations with Wisin & Yandel, Janet Jackson, and Jennifer Lopez, reflecting his versatility across genres. Rolling Stone has referred to Tainy as one of the architects of modern reggaeton. His ongoing work continues to influence the direction of Latin music and music production worldwide.
