
Steven McCoy is a journalist, advocate, and speaker recognized as the world's first Black DeafBlind journalist. McCoy has covered a range of red-carpet events and is the host of the podcast "Sessions with Steven," where he conducts interviews with media and public figures. His work has appeared in media outlets including Revolt, Hollywood Unlocked, CNN, Yahoo, NBC, CBS, and LA Weekly, contributing to conversations around accessibility, disability advocacy, and diversity in media.
McCoy began wearing hearing aids at age five and was later diagnosed with Usher syndrome. He has served as a script writer for BET's "106th & Park" and as a host for Radio Disney. Following his diagnosis, McCoy adapted to virtual journalism, using his platform to advocate for the DeafBlind community and promote inclusion in media.
His advocacy includes meeting with White House legislators and serving in leadership roles such as Board Director for the Usher Syndrome Coalition, on the Leadership Board for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and as DeafBlind Facilitator for the National Federation for the Blind of New Jersey. He was appointed by the Governor of New Jersey as the Representative of Business and Industry for the New Jersey State Rehabilitation Council.
McCoy founded Spoken Heroes, a nonprofit organization focused on empowering the disabled community and fostering inclusion. Spoken Heroes has partnered with organizations and brands including ROC NATION, OrCam, and the New York City Department of Social Services. McCoy has also consulted on animation films and gaming projects to implement inclusive practices and was named to the Forbes Founder's 40 Under 40 list.
McCoy's work has been recognized with honors such as AT&T's "Black Future Makers," the "Take the Lead" award by the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Spangenberg-Chappell Memorial Award at the Disability Impact Awards. He attended the ReelAbilities Film Festival as press and interviewed Whoopi Goldberg, marking a significant moment in his journalism career. Through his work, McCoy continues to advance representation and accessibility for DeafBlind individuals and the broader disabled community.
