
Steven A. Saltzman is a music editor, composer, and educator whose career has influenced the field of film and television music. Saltzman earned a Bachelor of Music in composition and film scoring from Berklee College of Music in Boston and has composed scores for numerous films and television projects. Early in his career, he studied composition with Boston Conservatory composer John Hess and, while on the East Coast, composed music for WGBH and ABC Television, independent films, commercials, and theater productions. These experiences provided a foundation for a Hollywood career spanning more than two decades.
Saltzman has worked as a music editor for over 20 years, earning a Golden Reel Award and seven Golden Reel nominations. With credits on more than 90 films and television shows, his feature film work includes "Lansky," "Mary" with Gary Oldman, "The Package," "24 Hours to Live" with Ethan Hawke, "The Revenant" with Leonardo DiCaprio, and "Tides of Fate," a David Ellison documentary. Saltzman has collaborated with composers such as Tyler Bates, Klaus Badelt, Laura Karpman, Bryce Dessner, Mark Mothersbaugh, Pinar Toprak, and Nathan Furst. His expertise bridges the creative and technical demands of music post-production in the entertainment industry.
Saltzman is also an author who has contributed to the literature of music editing. He has published two books: "Music Editing for Film and Television, The Art and The Process" and "The Music of Film: Collaborations and Conversations." The latter book features interviews and conversations with 20 professional composers, music supervisors, music editors, and picture editors, offering a collection of techniques, tips, and insights on collaboration and career development in post-production. Both volumes are recognized as resources for film music professionals.
Saltzman is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and serves on the advisory council of the Entertainment Industry Professionals Mentoring Alliance. He served on the board of Motion Picture Sound Editors for 16 years and is a long-time member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild and the Society of Composers and Lyricists. As an educator, Saltzman teaches music editing and post-production music for composers in the Film Scoring Certificate Program at UCLA Extension and at the American Film Institute. He also lectures and presents for institutions including California State University, USC, Chapman University, Berklee College of Music, Edinburgh Napier University, Savannah Film Festival, and Cal Arts. Saltzman is recognized for his mentorship and expertise in film music, music editing, and post-production.
