Steve Pikiell

Steve Pikiell serves as the head men's basketball coach at Rutgers University in the Big Ten Conference, recognized for his program-building expertise in college basketball. Pikiell played at the University of Connecticut, where he was a four-year letterwinner and two-time team captain. During his captaincy, Connecticut won its first Big East title and advanced to the Elite Eight and Sweet 16. His playing experience under coach Jim Calhoun influenced his coaching philosophy, with an emphasis on defense, discipline, and player development.

After earning a degree in finance, Pikiell began his coaching career as an assistant at Connecticut, followed by roles at Yale, Wesleyan University as interim head coach, Central Connecticut State, and George Washington. He later became head men's basketball coach at Stony Brook University, where he compiled an overall record of 192–156 over 11 seasons. At Stony Brook, Pikiell led the program to six postseason appearances in seven years, secured four America East regular season championships, and was named America East Coach of the Year four times. He guided Stony Brook to its first NCAA Tournament appearance.

At Rutgers, Pikiell has overseen a significant turnaround, guiding the team back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991 and achieving consecutive NCAA appearances for the first time since 1976. He reached his 100th career victory at Rutgers and 300th career victory overall, and led the program to three straight postseason berths for the first time in school history. Pikiell received the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award after leading Rutgers to a 20-win season. He has coached notable Rutgers players, including All-American Ron Harper Jr., National Defensive Player of the Year and all-time steals leader Caleb McConnell, and Big Ten Medal of Honor winner Geo Baker. Pikiell also led the recruitment of highly ranked players Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, who became the highest NBA draft picks in program history.

Pikiell announced a cancer diagnosis, with assistant coach Brandin Knight stepping into interim duties during his treatment. He has stated his intention to remain involved with the program throughout his recovery. With more than 36 years of coaching experience, Pikiell's tenure at Rutgers reflects his enduring impact on the university's basketball program and the broader college basketball landscape.
