Stephon Alexander

Stephon Alexander is a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, jazz saxophonist, and author whose career bridges science and music. Alexander has developed an academic career at leading institutions, including research roles at Imperial College London and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center at Stanford University, followed by faculty appointments at Penn State, Haverford College, Dartmouth College, and Brown University. His research in theoretical physics focuses on the intersection of cosmology, particle physics, and quantum gravity. Alexander co-developed the D-Brane inflation model, which proposes that cosmic inflation could result from the interaction and annihilation of higher-dimensional membranes. He later introduced Chern-Simons modified general relativity, influencing the study of gravitational waves. Over his career, Alexander has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and collaborated with organizations such as CERN and LIGO.

Alexander became the first Black physicist elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society's Division of Gravitational Physics, recognized for his contributions to quantum cosmology. His honors include the Edward A. Bouchet Award for physicists of African descent, the Isaac Asimov Science Award for public engagement, and the Frantz Fanon Award for achievements in science and philosophy. He served as president of the National Society of Black Physicists, where he expanded mentorship programs, increased scholarship funding, and strengthened partnerships between academia and industry. Alexander has also directed Dartmouth College's EE Just STEM Scholars Program, volunteered for public speaking in inner-city schools, and taught mathematics in prisons, reflecting his commitment to broadening access to science education.

Alexander's work as a jazz musician is integral to his approach to physics. He formed the ensemble God Particle, released the album "Spacetime Melodies," and has performed at the Vision Festival in New York, collaborated with Brian Eno, and appeared at international venues. During his postdoctoral work at Imperial College London, Alexander met Brian Eno at a "quantum gravity cocktail hour," leading to a friendship that deepened his perspective on the connections between music and physics.

Alexander is the author of the bestselling book "The Jazz of Physics," which explores the relationship between music, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and general relativity. The book was shortlisted for Physics World's Book of the Year. Alexander served as science advisor for the film adaptation of "A Wrinkle in Time," helping the creative team integrate scientific accuracy with the story's fantasy elements.

As a science communicator, Alexander has delivered a TEDx talk, "The Jazz of Physics," which has received over one million views. He has appeared on PBS NOVA and NPR's "Code Switch," presenting complex scientific concepts in accessible language. Named a National Geographic Explorer, Alexander has researched the relationship between music and science in Caribbean and Amazonian cultures. He has attracted large audiences to public lectures, such as CIERA's anniversary event at Northwestern University, where he combined live jazz performance with scientific discussion.
