Stephen Young

Stephen Young is a recognized authority on leadership communication and the originator of the micromessaging concept. As senior partner of Insight Education Systems, a management consulting firm specializing in leadership and organizational development, Young has focused his career on helping organizations understand the impact of subtle, often unconscious communication. He introduced the concept of micromessages—gestures, facial expressions, tones of voice, word choices, eye contact, and interactive nuances that can either hinder or empower employees and influence leadership effectiveness. Young founded Insight Education Systems, applying these principles to a significant portion of Fortune 500 companies and their executive teams.

Before establishing his consulting practice, Young held executive roles in the financial services industry. As former senior vice president and chief diversity officer at JPMorgan Chase, he managed the firm's global diversity strategy. Under his leadership, the company received several awards for its diversity initiatives, including the Catalyst Award, Fortune Magazine's Top 50 Companies for Minorities Award, the Best Companies Award from Working Mother Magazine, and DiversityInc Magazine's designation as the top company for diversity. Prior to JPMorgan Chase, Young served as vice president for diversity at Merrill Lynch. This extensive corporate experience informs his perspective when advising business leaders on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Young is the author of the book, "Micromessaging: Why Great Leadership is Beyond Words," recognized as a McGraw-Hill Business Classic. This guide has supported business leaders across hundreds of companies in dozens of countries in building leadership effectiveness and fostering functional workplaces, and it has been updated to address digital communication and social change. Young is also the author of "The Evolved Leader," which explores the theory that leadership selection is influenced by physical dimensions. Drawing on research from MIT, Young's approach has supported numerous Fortune 500 clients, including Merck, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Starbucks, IBM, Boeing, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Cisco, and Raytheon, in increasing leadership effectiveness.

Young's seminar, "MicroInequities: Managing Unconscious Bias™," has been adopted by a significant portion of the Fortune 500 across multiple countries and is regarded by corporate leaders as a new paradigm for managing unconscious bias. The president of Princeton University invited him to conduct a session with the college's deans, reflecting the broad relevance of his work.
