Stephen King

Stephen King is a business and philanthropy leader known for applying media and technology to advance social impact initiatives. As a partner at Omidyar Network, King leads the organization’s Government Transparency investment portfolio, supporting organizations that promote open information, civic participation, and accountable governance. Based in London, King’s portfolio has included work with groups such as FrontlineSMS, Global Voices, mySociety, Refugees United, Ushahidi, and The XYZ Show.

King is the former as chief executive of Luminate, a foundation established by Pierre Omidyar to help build more just and inclusive societies. Through strategic investments, partnerships, and policy advocacy, King and the Luminate team support organizations working to expand civic participation and strengthen institutions that serve the public interest.

Prior to these roles, King was Chief Executive of the BBC World Service Trust, where he guided global expansion efforts that established development programs in more than 40 countries focused on using media and communications to improve social outcomes and promote transparency. Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions with the International Council on Social Welfare and worked with organizations including HelpAge International, Help the Aged, and Voluntary Service Overseas.

King serves on the boards of Ushahidi, Global Voices, and mySociety. He holds an MA in Oriental and African Studies from the University of London.
