Steffi Graf is recognized as one of the most accomplished athletes in professional tennis, known for her power, speed, and tactical approach that influenced the evolution of the women's game. Graf emerged as a leading figure in women's tennis, ending the dominance of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. At age 13, she became the second youngest player to earn an international ranking, and her rise to the top of the sport was rapid. In her first major final, Graf defeated Navratilova to win her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, marking a significant shift in women's tennis.

Graf's career reached its peak with a season that remains unique in tennis history. She became the first tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four major titles—Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and US Open—and the Olympic gold medal in a single calendar year. Graf's Grand Slam was completed on three surfaces: grass, clay, and hard court, a distinction unmatched in the sport. In the Olympic final, she defeated Gabriela Sabatini to secure the Golden Slam, a feat not repeated in women's tennis.

Throughout her career, Graf won 22 Grand Slam titles: four Australian Open, six Roland Garros, seven Wimbledon, and five US Open championships. She achieved three of the four majors in four different seasons, becoming the only player to complete a quadruple career Grand Slam. Graf spent a record 377 weeks as World No. 1, including 186 consecutive weeks, and finished eight seasons at the top. Her playing style was characterized by versatility across all surfaces, precise footwork, and a powerful forehand, contributing to the development of the modern baseline game. Nicknamed Fraulein Forehand by tennis commentator Bud Collins, Graf was named the Greatest Female Tennis Player of the 20th Century by a panel of tennis experts from the Associated Press.

Graf's career included overcoming significant challenges. After her father was convicted of tax fraud, Graf was cleared of any wrongdoing but faced the impact of the scandal. The stabbing of Monica Seles by a fan during Seles' time at the top of women's tennis also affected Graf. Despite these adversities, Graf returned to win her 22nd and final major title at the French Open before retiring. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the German Sports Hall of Fame.

Off the court, Graf has contributed to humanitarian efforts. She co-founded Children for Tomorrow with University of Hamburg child psychologist Peter Riedesser to support the mental health of refugee children in Germany. The foundation develops projects to aid children and adolescents affected by war, persecution, or organized violence. Graf remains involved in the foundation's activities, participating in therapy sessions and collaborating with her team and partners. Her commitment to tennis and humanitarian work has established her as a significant figure in both sports and global advocacy.
