Stefanie Stantcheva

Stefanie Stantcheva is the Nathaniel Ropes Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University where she has been serving since 2021. In the same year, she was elected a Fellow of the Econometric Society and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research. Stantcheva's work delves into public finance and political economy, focusing on the taxation of firms and individuals, and how these affect innovation, education, and wealth.

Stantcheva founded the Social Economics Lab at Harvard, which conducts large-scale online surveys and experiments to study people's attitudes towards economic policies. She has been a member of France’s Conseil d’analyse économique since 2018 and has been serving as an editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics since 2020. Her work is frequently featured in French media, where she discusses her research and insights on economic policies and attitudes. In 2018, The Economist recognized Stantcheva as one of the decade's eight best young economists.

Throughout her career, Stantcheva has received numerous awards for her contributions to the field of economics. These include the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2017, the Elaine Bennett Research Prize in 2020, the Prix du meilleur jeune économiste de France in 2019, the Prix Maurice Allais de Science Économique in 2021, a Carnegie Fellowship in 2021, and a Guggenheim Award in 2022. Most notably, she was awarded the prestigious John Bates Clark Medal in 2025. Her influential research papers on topics such as optimal taxation of top labor incomes, preferences for redistribution, and the impact of taxation on innovation have helped shape economic discourse.
