Sonia Raman

Sonia Raman embarked on her coaching journey in 2008, leading the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineers women's basketball team for 12 years. During her tenure, she achieved the most wins in the team's history, cementing her legacy with the Engineers. Her expertise took her to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2020, where she served as an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies for four years. Her contributions were instrumental in scouting, player development, and analytics, demonstrating her multifaceted skills in the sport.

As a testament to her abilities, Raman was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Basketball Coach of the Year consecutively in 2016 and 2017. She continued to break barriers in 2020 when she became the first Indian-American woman and the 14th woman overall to be named as an NBA coach. In 2025, she joined the coaching staff of the New York Liberty, further extending her influence in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Currently, Raman is the head coach for the Seattle Storm of the WNBA, sustaining her continued involvement in the sport. Outside the court, she is recognized as part of the 21st-century American sportswomen and the LGBTQ sports community. Being a basketball coach and a former basketball player herself, her professional experiences and personal identity add to her unique perspectives and insights, making her an influential figure in the sports world.
