Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is known for his extensive achievements in global exploration and adventure. Recognized by Guinness World Records as "the world's greatest living explorer," Fiennes completed the Transglobe Expedition, becoming the first person to visit both the North and South Poles by surface means and the first to cross Antarctica entirely on foot. Before his career in exploration, Fiennes served in the British Army for eight years, including counter-insurgency service with the army of the Sultanate of Oman. Since leading the British Expedition on the White Nile, Fiennes has participated in numerous exploratory missions.

Among his notable expeditions are the Transglobe Expedition, during which Fiennes and Charles Burton traveled around the world on its polar axis using only surface transport, covering 52,000 miles and becoming the first people to visit both poles. His other expeditions include the North Polar Unsupported Expedition, which set a record for the furthest north reached without support, the Anglo Soviet North Pole Expedition, and the co-leadership of the Ubar Expedition, which discovered the site believed to be Ptolemy's Atlantis of the Sands, a historic frankincense center. Fiennes was also the first explorer to cross the Antarctic continent unsupported and reached the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the oldest Briton to do so.

Fiennes has faced significant adversity during his expeditions. On a solo attempt to walk unsupported to the North Pole, he sustained severe frostbite after pulling his sleds from weak ice. He later removed the necrotic fingertips himself. After recovering from a heart attack and double heart bypass surgery, Fiennes completed seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. He has raised over £14 million for UK charities through his expeditions and public speaking.

As an author, Fiennes has published numerous novels, biographies, travelogues, and nonfiction works. His books include his autobiography "Living Dangerously," the UK Number One Bestseller "The Feather Men," "Atlantis of the Sands," "Mind Over Matter," "Beyond the Limits," and "Captain Scott." In "Captain Scott," Fiennes offers a defense of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, challenging modern interpretations of the explorer's legacy.

Fiennes received the Polar Medal for outstanding service to British polar exploration and research, and is the only person awarded a double clasp for visiting both poles. He was appointed OBE for human endeavor and charitable services.
