Simon Stiell

Simon Stiell serves as the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). With a background spanning more than three decades, Stiell is recognized in global climate diplomacy for his approaches to addressing the climate crisis. Prior to his role at the United Nations, Stiell was a senior minister in the Government of Grenada, where he served as minister for climate resilience and the environment, as well as holding portfolios in education and human resource development. His work in Grenada’s government focused on advancing climate resilience and sustainable development, particularly for vulnerable nations.

Stiell has played a significant role on the international stage, guiding the global community through key moments such as the agreement on loss-and-damage funding at COP27, which secured financial commitments for countries most affected by climate change. Under his leadership, the UNFCCC completed its first global stocktake at COP28, providing an assessment of progress toward limiting global warming and outlining steps for nations, including phasing out coal and increasing renewable energy. Stiell is known for fostering consensus and driving climate action in international climate policy.

Before entering public service, Stiell held senior executive roles in the technology sector at companies including Nokia and GEC Plessey Telecommunications. He holds an engineering degree and an MBA from the University of Westminster. Stiell frequently speaks at international forums and climate conferences, sharing insights on climate governance, sustainable development, and collective action against climate change.
