Simon Sebag Montefiore

Simon Sebag Montefiore is a British historian, television presenter, and author known for his work on Russian and Middle Eastern history. His books are published in more than 40 languages. Montefiore began his career as a foreign affairs journalist, reporting from the Soviet Union during the collapse of Communism. This experience informed his later focus on Russian history. He studied history at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge University, where he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy.

Montefiore's work includes both nonfiction and historical fiction. His notable books include "Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar," "Jerusalem: The Biography," "The Romanovs: 1613–1918," and "The World: A Family History of Humanity." "Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar" received the British Book Awards History Book of the Year Prize. "Young Stalin" won the Costa Biography Award, the LA Times Book Prize for Biography, the Grand Prix de la Biographie Politique, and the Kreisky Prize. "Jerusalem: The Biography" was a Sunday Times bestseller and won the Book of the Year Prize from the Jewish Book Council and the Wenjin Book Prize. "The Romanovs: 1613–1918" received the Lupicaia del Terriccio Book Prize, and "The World: A Family History of Humanity" was named The Times History Book of the Year.

In addition to nonfiction, Montefiore is the author of the Moscow Trilogy: "Sashenka," "Red Sky at Noon," and "One Night in Winter," with the latter winning the Paddy Power Political Novel of the Year Prize. Several of his books have been developed as TV drama series or movies.

Montefiore has written and presented five BBC TV series, including "The Making of a Holy City" (Jerusalem), "A History of the Eternal City" (Rome), "Byzantium: A Tale of Three Cities" (Istanbul), "Blood and Gold" (Spain), and "Empire, Dynasty and Dream" (Vienna). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a visiting professor at the University of Buckingham. Montefiore is recognized for making complex historical subjects accessible to broad audiences and is regarded as an expert in Russian and Middle Eastern history.
