Shiv Malik

Shiv Malik is a British technologist, author, broadcaster, and former investigative journalist whose career has included frontline war reporting, print journalism, and work in the digital economy. Malik began his career reporting from Afghanistan and Pakistan before writing for outlets including Prospect Magazine, The Sunday Times, and The Independent on Sunday. He was involved in a court battle with Greater Manchester Police to protect his sources on terrorism and later worked for The Guardian, breaking front-page stories on topics such as UK government social policy and secret ISIS documents. Malik has appeared on media outlets including BBC Newsnight and Channel 4, discussing subjects ranging from Islamic terrorism to social media companies.

Malik is the author of two books: "Jilted Generation," an economics book examining the challenges faced by Britons of the Millennial generation, and "The Messenger," a personal account of a relationship with a terrorist-cum-fantasist. "Jilted Generation" has been cited as an inspiration for the TV series "Not Safe For Work" for Channel 4. Malik also created a true crime Audible original podcast of the same name, which was nominated for an Ambie Award.

Transitioning to the technology sector, Malik became a prominent voice on data rights and the digital economy. He joined the Web3 space as an adviser to the Golem project and served as head of growth for Streamr, where he co-created the Data Unions framework. Malik co-founded Pool, leading efforts to build a federation of Data Unions to enable digital citizens to reclaim control of their data and participate in the digital economy. A Data Union pools data from various parties to monetize it collectively, offering an alternative to the dominance of large tech platforms over personal information.

Malik leads Pathaka AI as founder and CEO, focusing on artificial intelligence initiatives. He also co-founded the Albion City Development Corporation, which proposes building a new city east of Cambridge with permanently affordable housing for one million people. The plan envisions a forest city on 45,000 acres, surrounded by 12,000 acres of woodland. Malik's career spans journalism, policy, technology, and urban innovation, positioning him as a knowledgeable voice on the forces shaping modern society.
