Shirley Murdock Biography
Shirley Murdock is an American R&B and gospel singer-songwriter, born on May 22, 1957, in Toledo, Ohio. She began her musical journey singing gospel music in her hometown before gaining prominence in the 1980s. Murdock was discovered by Roger Troutman of the funk band Zapp, who hired her as a background vocalist. This collaboration led to her signing with Elektra Records and the release of her debut album, Shirley Murdock! in 1986. The album featured the hit single "As We Lay," which became a Top 10 R&B hit and peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Throughout her career, Murdock released several albums, including A Woman's Point of View (1988) and Let There Be Love! (1991). In the early 2000s, she transitioned to gospel music, releasing the album Home in 2002, which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart . She also collaborated with Bishop T.D. Jakes on his Sacred Love Songs project in 1999.
In addition to her music career, Murdock has appeared in various stage plays, including Be Careful What You Pray For and A Mother's Prayer. She also participated in the stage play Momma’s Boy, alongside other notable artists.
As of 2025, Murdock continues to be active in the music industry, performing and recording new material.
