Sherri Coale

Sherri Coale is recognized for her significant contributions to women's college basketball. A summa cum laude graduate of Oklahoma Christian College, Coale began her coaching career in high school, leading Norman High School to two Class 6A state championships and compiling a 147-40 career record. She was hired as head coach at the University of Oklahoma, transitioning from Norman High School at age 31, a decision that had a lasting impact on the program.

Coale served as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners women's basketball team for 25 years. She inherited a program in transition and, within four years, led the Sooners back to the NCAA Tournament. Under her leadership, the team reached the national championship game, facing Connecticut, and achieved a 16-0 record in Big 12 play, becoming the second Big 12 basketball team—men's or women's—to go undefeated in conference play. Coale also guided the Sooners to back-to-back NCAA Tournament Final Four appearances, with semifinal games against Louisville and Stanford. During her tenure, the program won four Big 12 Tournament championships, six Big 12 regular season championships, qualified for 19 consecutive NCAA tournaments, and made three Final Four appearances.

Throughout her career in women's basketball, Coale coached four All-Americans and 14 WNBA draft selections. Her teams consistently achieved high academic standards, maintaining a combined team GPA of 3.0 or better for a program record 37 of 44 semesters. Fan engagement grew significantly during her tenure, with the 50 largest crowds for women's basketball at Oklahoma occurring while she was head coach, including a record attendance of 12,205 for a game against Oklahoma State.

Coale's experience extends to international basketball, having served as an assistant coach for USA Basketball and as head coach at the World University Games, where her team won gold against Russia. She has held leadership roles as president of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, and serves on the Board of Trustees at Oklahoma Christian University. Coale is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Christian University Hall of Fame, Norman High School Hall of Fame, and the FCA Hall of Champions. Her accolades include recognition as a Naismith Coach of the Year finalist and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Impact Award.

After retiring from coaching, Coale has focused on writing, public speaking, consulting, and her family. She was awarded an honorary degree at the University of Oklahoma's 134th Commencement. Coale continues to share insights on leadership, resilience, and personal development, drawing from her extensive experience in collegiate athletics and education.
