Shel Winkley

Shel Winkley is the weather and climate engagement specialist at Climate Central. Winkley collaborates with meteorologists, journalists, scientists, content creators, storytellers and other trusted voices to identify climate change's fingerprint on current and past weather events. By translating the data and science of climate change into tangible, localized stories that resonate with people's lives and curiosity, Winkley empowers these communicators to spark the conversations that matter in their communities about climate change. His expertise spans climate communication, broadcast meteorology and weather attribution science.

Winkley spent nearly two decades in broadcast meteorology, including 15 years as a chief meteorologist at KBTX in Bryan-College Station, Texas, where he also taught broadcast meteorology at Texas A&M University and served as meteorologist for Texas A&M athletics. Winkley has earned multiple awards from the Texas Association of Broadcasters, EMMA Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Innovation. He was featured in The Atlantic for his climate communication work. Winkley holds a bachelor's degree in meteorology from Texas A&M University and is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist through the American Meteorological Society.
