Shani Davis Biography
Shani Davis, a former speed skater from Chicago, Illinois, was the first African American athlete to win a gold medal in an individual event at the Olympic Winter Games. He won gold in the 1000-metre long-track event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Additionally, Davis won the silver medal at the 1500-metre event during the same games.
Davis continued his impressive streak by successfully defending his gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. He became the first man to win back-to-back 1,000-metre speed-skating gold medals; he also won a second silver medal in the 1,500-metre race at the 2010 Winter games.
Davis' contribution to the sport of speed skating is significant, having led the United States to its first and only World Championship gold medal in the Team Pursuit event in 2011. He won ten career Overall World Cup titles and set a total of nine world records. He retired from skating in 2019 after competing in two more Olympic Games, and has been enshrined in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History.
