Sebastian Berhalter

Sebastian Berhalter is a professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Major League Soccer club Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the United States national team. Berhalter began his MLS career as a homegrown signing with Columbus Crew, the club where his father played and coached. He developed through the Columbus Crew SC academy, featuring for the Under-13/14, U-15/16, U-16/17, and U-18/19 teams. After playing one season of college soccer in 16 games with the University of North Carolina, Berhalter turned professional and entered MLS.

Berhalter made his professional debut against FC Cincinnati during the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Florida, and made nine appearances for Columbus Crew during a season that concluded with an MLS Cup victory. He was later traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for general allocation money. With the Whitecaps, Berhalter became a key component of head coach Jesper Sørensen's system, starting 41 of his 47 appearances across all competitions and achieving career-highs in goals and assists. He scored eight goals and led the team with 16 assists, ranking second in the club's assists charts in the MLS era.

Berhalter's performances earned recognition across the league. He was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday three times, earned MLS Player of the Matchday honors after scoring twice against San Jose Earthquakes, was selected for the MLS All-Star roster, received MLS Best XI honors, and was named the club's Player of the Year. Off the field, Berhalter was recognized with the club's Humanitarian of the Year award for his community involvement, including work with BC Children's Hospital.

During a loan spell with Austin FC, Berhalter faced challenges including limited playing time and homesickness, which led him to question his future in professional soccer. He later reflected on this period as pivotal in his career. His form with Vancouver Whitecaps FC led to his first call-ups to the United States men's national team, where he contributed to the squad's run to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final and scored his first international goal in a 5-1 win over Uruguay at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Berhalter was named to the United States roster for the FIFA World Cup and is recognized as a leading midfielder in MLS. He provides the national team with a dead-ball specialist capable of delivering effective service from corner kicks and set pieces.
