Sean Sweeney

Sean Sweeney is an NBA coach known for his expertise in defensive basketball strategy and player development. Sweeney played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay for one season before transferring and graduating from the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul. He was a three-year starter at St. Thomas and earned all-conference honors as a senior. After graduating, Sweeney began his coaching career in assistant and operations roles at the collegiate level, including positions at the University of Evansville, Academy of Art University, and the University of Northern Iowa.

Sweeney started his NBA coaching career as a video coordinator with the New Jersey Nets under head coaches Avery Johnson and PJ Carlesimo. He later served as an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks, before joining the Detroit Pistons as an assistant coach under head coach Dwane Casey. During his tenure in Milwaukee, Sweeney contributed to the development of Giannis Antetokounmpo, serving as a workout partner and helping instill a competitive mindset that influenced Antetokounmpo's career on and off the court.

Sweeney joined the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach under head coach Jason Kidd, reuniting with Kidd after previous collaborations with the Nets and Bucks. He spent four seasons as Kidd's lead assistant, coordinating both offense and defense during the Mavericks' run to the NBA Finals. Sweeney also served on Slovenia's coaching staff during the Olympics, working closely with Luka Doncic. He then joined the San Antonio Spurs as associate head coach, where he managed the team's defense and guided an improvement in defensive efficiency rankings. Sweeney was part of the Spurs team that advanced to the NBA Finals.

The Orlando Magic hired Sweeney as the franchise's head coach, making him the 16th head coach in team history. Sweeney brings postseason experience, having served as a lead assistant to a conference finalist in multiple seasons. His coaching philosophy emphasizes hard work and a holistic approach to player development, integrating mental preparation with on-court execution. With a roster featuring Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Desmond Bane, Sweeney brings championship-level experience and a record of team transformation to his head coaching role with the Magic.
