Scout Bassett

Scout Bassett is a prominent figure in Paralympic sport, known as a sprinter, author, and advocate. Bassett's journey began in a government-run orphanage in Nanjing, China, where she lost her right leg and suffered severe burns in a chemical fire as an infant. During her years in the orphanage, she used a makeshift prosthetic leg constructed from leather belts and masking tape. At age 7, she was adopted by an American family and moved to the United States. Bassett later attended UCLA on a full academic scholarship, earning her degree and establishing the foundation for her advocacy work.

Bassett began competing in athletics as a teenager, initially participating in triathlons. She earned three silver medals and one bronze medal at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships before transitioning to track and field. Bassett made her Paralympic debut in Rio, competing in the women's 100 meters and women's long jump. She won gold at the Lima Parapan American Games and secured international medals in the 100 meters and long jump at the World Para Athletics Championships in London. Bassett is a seven-time national champion in the 100 meters, the world record holder in the 400 meters, and the American record holder in the 200 meters.

In addition to her athletic career, Bassett is recognized as a speaker, author, and advocate for disability inclusion and women in sports. Her book, "Lucky Girl: Lessons on Overcoming Odds & Building a Limitless Future," explores her experiences and insights. She was featured in Season 2 of "The Greatness Code" on Apple TV+. Bassett serves as the Women's Sports Foundation Board President, is a member of the Gatorade Women's Advisory Board, and co-hosts BBC Sport's podcast "On The Podium."

Bassett's advocacy includes the Scout Bassett Grant, established by The Scout Bassett Fund in partnership with the Women's Sports Foundation and Athletes for Impact, which provides financial support to women athletes with disabilities. The fund has awarded $80,000 to 10 women athletes, supporting access and longevity in sport. Bassett has received recognition from USA Today as one of its Women of the Year, Refinery29 as a Powerhouse, and has been honored with the Clio Sports Impact Award. She is also recognized as the UCLA Young Alumnus of the Year. Bassett's work continues to influence adaptive sports, disability advocacy, and women's empowerment in athletics.
