Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld is a New York Times bestselling author recognized for his contributions to young adult science fiction. The author of approximately 40 novels, primarily for young adults, Westerfeld studied philosophy at Vassar College and began his career writing adult science fiction before transitioning to young adult fiction. Before focusing on writing, he worked in various roles, including factory worker, substitute teacher, textbook editor, and software designer. Early in his career, he also composed music for dance productions in the United States and Europe.

Westerfeld is known for the "Uglies" quartet, which explores a future society where cosmetic surgery is mandatory at age 16. He revisited this world with four additional novels, beginning with "Impostors." His work frequently addresses themes of free thinking and challenging authority, as seen in "Uglies," where the protagonist, Tally, resists societal norms. Westerfeld is also recognized for the "Leviathan" trilogy, a steampunk retelling of World War I illustrated by Keith Thompson, featuring adventure, walking machines, and living airships. Other notable works include the "Midnighters" trilogy, the "Zeroes" series co-written with Margo Lanagan and Deborah Biancotti, the graphic novel "Spill Zone," and the novel "Afterworlds."

Westerfeld's books have sold more than five million copies worldwide and have been translated into over 32 languages. His accolades include a Special Citation for the Philip K. Dick Award for "Evolution's Darling," a Victorian Premier's Award for "So Yesterday," and an Aurealis Award for "The Secret Hour."
