Scott Henderson

Scott Henderson is an American industrial designer and inventor who leads Scott Henderson Inc., a Brooklyn-based product design and development studio. Known for designing everyday consumer products, Henderson has built a career as both an inventor and a television personality, with work spanning a wide range of product categories including consumer electronics, medical devices, juvenile accessories, housewares, home accessories, furniture, lighting, and aircraft.

Henderson began his career at Walter Dorwin Teague and Associates and later at Smart Design before founding Scott Henderson Inc. His designs for global Fortune 500 companies such as Microsoft, Hamilton Beach Brands, Intel, and Nike have achieved significant commercial success. More than 90 percent of Henderson's projects have been mass-produced, a notable accomplishment in the industrial design industry.

Henderson's work is included in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Museum, and Alessi Museum. Sixteen of his products have been offered for sale at the Museum of Modern Art's MoMA Design Store. His designs have also been exhibited by the San Jose Museum of Art, Holon Museum in Israel, Brussels Design Museum, Triennial De Milano Design Museum, Walker Art Center, and Saatchi Gallery in London.

His portfolio includes recognition in I.D. Magazine's Annual Design Review, Metropolitan Home's special issue "The Design 100," and multiple Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards from the BusinessWeek-IDSA Industrial Design Excellence Awards. Henderson has received two Gold Medical Design Excellence Awards, as well as CES and Good Design Awards. His designs were featured in "The Shock of the Familiar," a New York Times Magazine summary of the 20th century's best designs. He received TIME Magazine's Best Invention Award for the "LynQ Smart People's Compass." Among his widely recognized designs, the Moby Spout Cover became a staple in American households and was parodied by Pixar in the Toy Story-era short film "Partysaurus Rex."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Henderson collaborated with ZVerse to develop the "ZShield Flex," a reusable face shield designed to address the need for improved personal protective equipment. The shield, which allows a full view of the wearer's face, was worn by public figures including Michelle Obama, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Sheen, Sandra Bullock, Adrien Brody, and Jennifer Aniston. Henderson was named the winner of the inaugural "New York By Design" CBS television series for his "ZShield Flex" design.

Beyond his studio work, Henderson is active in the design community as a public speaker and presenter. He has served as a keynote speaker at IDSA Conferences in Atlanta, Chicago, and Providence, and at the Japan Society's symposium "Universal Design, Design for All People." Henderson served as the Design Ambassador and Partner Country Designer representing the United States for Messe Frankfurt Ambiente, the world's largest consumer goods trade show. He conceived and designed a pavilion representing the United States, curated the exhibition with U.S. manufacturers and designers, and led panel discussions and presentations at the event. Henderson is a judge and presenter on the television show "America By Design Innovation" on CBS. He has published articles on the importance of design in Innovation, the journal of the Industrial Designers Society of America, and in the Design Management Institute's Design Management Journal.
