Sarah Friar Biography
Sarah Friar is chief financial officer of OpenAI and a seasoned technology executive with extensive experience leading high-growth companies. She previously served as CEO of Nextdoor, the world’s largest private social network for neighborhoods, and as CFO and operations lead at Square, where she helped guide the company through its 2015 initial public offering and contributed to a $30 billion increase in market capitalization.
Before Square, Friar was senior vice president of finance and strategy at Salesforce. She also held leadership roles at Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Company, working in both London and South Africa. Friar currently serves on the boards of Walmart and Slack. She is a fellow of the inaugural class of the Finance Leaders Fellowship Program, a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, and co-founder of Ladies Who Launch, a network supporting women entrepreneurs.
Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Friar earned a master’s degree in metallurgy, economics, and management from the University of Oxford and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where she was recognized as an Arjay Miller Scholar.
