Sanmi Koyejo

Sanmi Koyejo is an artificial intelligence researcher and entrepreneur focused on advancing trustworthy, safe, and accountable AI systems. Koyejo is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University and co-founder of Virtue AI. He leads the Stanford Trustworthy AI Research (STAIR) lab, which develops measurement-theoretic foundations for trustworthy AI, covering AI evaluation science, algorithmic accountability, and privacy-preserving machine learning, with applications in healthcare and scientific discovery. Koyejo earned a doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin and completed postdoctoral research at Stanford University. Prior to joining Stanford, he was an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Koyejo co-founded Virtue AI, a company developing enterprise solutions for AI safety and security, including automated red teaming, runtime guardrails, and AI governance. His research on AI evaluation, adversarial robustness, and safety assessment has been implemented in production systems at major technology companies, including Google DeepMind, where he worked as a research scientist. Koyejo's work focuses on evaluating AI model capabilities and limitations, with an emphasis on building reliable, accurate, and secure AI systems that are less susceptible to misuse.

Koyejo's research on AI capabilities evaluation has influenced the field, including contributions to measurement frameworks referenced in the Economic Report of the President. He has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, Skip Ellis Early Career Award, Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, NSF CAREER Award, and multiple outstanding paper awards at conferences such as NeurIPS and ACL. Koyejo has also received research funding and recognition from Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, and was named to TIME's list of influential people in artificial intelligence.

Meta announced the hiring of Koyejo and co-founders Dawn Song and Bo Li to join its Superintelligence Labs, with Koyejo contributing to Meta's Fundamental AI Research division. He has delivered keynote presentations at conferences including ECCV and FAccT, and has contributed to AI policy development through Congressional briefings and co-authoring policy recommendations for responsible AI deployment.

Koyejo serves as president of Black in AI, an organization dedicated to empowering Black professionals in artificial intelligence and advancing ethical AI applications, with a goal of increasing diversity among AI practitioners in academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. He served as general co-chair of NeurIPS, a leading conference in AI research, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation. Through research, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, Koyejo continues to shape the field of responsible artificial intelligence.
