Salt-N-Pepa

Salt-N-Pepa is a hip-hop group formed in New York City, consisting of Cheryl James, Sandra Denton, and DJ Spinderella (Deidra Roper). James and Denton met as students at Queensborough Community College, where they studied nursing. While working as customer service representatives for Sears, they were approached by coworker Hurby Azor to record a song for a class project, which led to their entry into the music industry. The group emerged during a period when hip-hop was not widely embraced by major record companies. As one of the first female rap groups, Salt-N-Pepa contributed to expanding opportunities for women in hip-hop.

The group's debut album, "Hot, Cool & Vicious," sold more than 1 million copies in the United States, making Salt-N-Pepa the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America. The album featured the single "Push It," which reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, "A Salt with a Deadly Pepa," was certified gold, and their third album, "Blacks' Magic," included the singles "Expression" and "Let's Talk About Sex." The album "Very Necessary" sold over 7 million copies worldwide and became the highest-selling rap album by a female act at the time, featuring singles such as "Shoop" and "Whatta Man" with En Vogue. The single "None of Your Business" earned Salt-N-Pepa the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance, marking the first time a female rap group received this recognition.

Salt-N-Pepa have sold more than 15 million records worldwide, ranking among the best-selling rap acts. The group is recognized for its influence on hip-hop culture and for being among the first rap artists to achieve mainstream pop success. Salt-N-Pepa's contributions have influenced subsequent generations of female rappers. In addition to their music career, the group starred in the reality TV show "The Salt-N-Pepa Show" on VH1. Denton also authored the autobiography "Let's Talk About Pep," which explores her personal and professional experiences in the music industry.

Salt-N-Pepa have received several honors, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the first female hip-hop group to earn this distinction. Their advocacy for artists' rights and continued presence in music underscore their ongoing relevance in hip-hop and popular culture.
