Ryan Walters

Ryan Walters is an American college football coach known for his expertise in defensive strategy and player development. Walters played college football for Colorado, where he started 33 of 46 games as a safety for the Buffaloes. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors from the Associated Press, first-team All-Colorado honors from the state's National Football Foundation, and served as team captain and MVP during his senior year. After going undrafted in the NFL draft, Walters transitioned to coaching and became the youngest position coach in the Pac-10 Conference during his tenure.

Walters joined the Memphis staff as cornerbacks coach, working alongside defensive coordinator Barry Odom. This partnership continued when Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel hired Odom as the Tigers' defensive coordinator, with Walters following as safeties coach. Upon Pinkel's retirement, Odom was promoted to head coach and Walters to co-defensive coordinator, later advancing to full-time defensive coordinator. Under Walters' leadership, Missouri's defense contributed to a 4-0 record in November, an eight-win season, and a bowl appearance. Walters' defense ranked in the nation's top 20 in several major categories, including total defense and scoring defense, and excelled as a top 10 pass defense.

At Illinois, Walters led a significant defensive turnaround, guiding the Illini to ranked wins over Penn State and Minnesota. The Illinois defense ranked in the top 10 in 17 major defensive categories, led the nation in interceptions, ranked second in scoring defense, and third in total defense. Walters also coached Devon Witherspoon, who became Illinois' first Jim Thorpe Award winner. Walters received recognition as the 247Sports Defensive Coordinator of the Year, On3 Coordinator of the Year, and was a finalist for the Broyles Award.

Purdue University named Walters the 37th head football coach in program history, making him one of the youngest head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision at the time. During his first season, Purdue faced a challenging schedule, tying for fourth in the Big Ten West and retaining both the Cannon Trophy and the Old Oaken Bucket. Walters later served as defensive coordinator at the University of Washington, returning to the Big Ten Conference in a new capacity. Walters' career reflects a focus on defensive innovation, college football leadership, and player achievement at the highest levels of the sport.
