Rutina Wesley

Rutina Wesley is an American actress known for her work in television, film, and theater. Wesley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater performance from the University of Evansville and continued her training at The Juilliard School's Drama Division. She also attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art during a summer program, building a foundation in classical acting that has supported her career across multiple mediums.

Wesley began her professional career on stage, making her Broadway debut in "The Vertical Hour" by David Hare, directed by Sam Mendes. She also participated in the pre-Broadway workshop of the musical "The Color Purple" and performed in The Public Theater's production of "In Darfur." Her feature film debut was in the dance drama "How She Move," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was later distributed by Paramount and MTV.

Wesley gained national recognition for her role as Tara Thornton in the HBO series "True Blood." Cast by creator Alan Ball, she portrayed a character navigating complex emotional challenges. Wesley was nominated for a Scream Award for Best Supporting Actress and, along with the ensemble, for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series.

She later starred as Nova Bordelon in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama series "Queen Sugar," produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey. The series was recognized for its storytelling and representation of African American culture. Wesley received multiple Black Reel Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series and several NAACP Image Award nominations for her work on the show. She has also appeared in the NBC drama "Hannibal" and the CW series "Arrow."

Wesley portrayed Maria Miller in the HBO series "The Last of Us," a role noted for its emotional depth. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree by Dean College in recognition of her contributions to acting and popular culture.
